Simply connect OBDII cable with 3 wires to 3 pins (male) engine connector
Viewing engine plug:
[] GND(to 4)
TX(to 7)[] [] 12V(to 16)
When you switch on engine, cable led must light on, if not, invert TX and 12V.Last edited by davepjr71; 12-20-2011, 10:18 AM.

the homemade rig works, I was forced to do it because BRP had the cable on back order for 6 months, besides that they charge you hundreds of dollars for a $10 cable what a stinking rip off. I used version 1.30, windows XP, and I had to assign the usb port to "port 1". it worked great.

I am having a hard time finding the ydis 1.30/1.32/1.33 software and the yamaha 3-pin communications connector to accomplish this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I have a question for the poster of this info:
Viewing engine plug:
[] GND(to 4)
TX(to 7)[] [] 12V(to 16)
My male plug on the engine is orientated like this:
[]
-----[]
[]
so would you directions be the same in my case:
[GND]
-----[12V]
[TX]
Thanks for any clarification on this.

look at the wire colors going into the back...if my memory is correct. black is ground, red is 12v, yellow is communication wire. I used insulated alligator clip jumpers to connect mine.

Late reply to this thread but it may help others.
I ordered a $13 dollar cable off E-bay and it works fine.
Make sure it is ISO4191 compatible, that is the standard Mitsubishi / Yamaha used to make the ECU.
The USB version of the cable will install a "USB to serial" driver when it installs. On my computer it installed it and set the COM port to COM6. The Yamaha software could not find it and just errored out. If you follow the instructions above and can not get the connection to work follow these steps.
(XP computer)
Open your device manager
1. Click start, the choose run
2. In the prompt box type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
3. Find and expand the Ports list.
4. Select then right click the USB to serial port that represents your cable.
5. Select Properties
6. Click the tab on top for port settings
7. Click the advanced button.
8. Set the COM port to COM port 1.
After I made these changes it linked right up and the Yamaha software had no idea I was not using the Yamaha cable.
Hope this helps.

Hello all. I am over from another boat forum which relies on yamahas exclusively.
I have the YDS software, but am trying to build a cable. I also happen to have an OBD cable that I got with a purchase of a scan tool for my car. In theory, this should work right? It came from scantool.net but I can't seem to get the YDS to recognize the cable.
I also just bought a new cable from ebay, but it would be great to be able to make this happen with what I have.
Thanks!
