I drained the bowls one had a couple specs of dirt. The air box is missing 2 of the gaskets that seal up the carbs and there is quite a bit of fuel on the air box. Are those gaskets a must have?

Look at the part labeled #1, bottom of picture. This is the silencer. Is this part what you're referring to as the air box? If so, the gaskets that go in between each carb and the silencer are not the issue causing the shaking. But the missing gaskets are the reason you see fuel inside the silencer.

I don't think an 86 engine would have RPM reduction...could be wrong though..

^^^ This is something meaningful to determine though. Maybe boscoe or rodbolt would know if an '86 has rpm reduction mode. Because if it does it would certainly explain the violent shaking the OP is experiencing. Especially since he's mentioned it begins to shake once warmed up, which could imply overheating.

Yes those are the missing gaskets I was referring too.
I'm gonna get it on the water this evening. And pull the temp sensor and pull the choke to see if that changes anything

Got it out on the water once the temp got up to 190 the motor started shaking again. Pulled the temp sensor off and it wouldn't shake again. Motor temp was up to 220. So that means I have a cooling problem correct? So replace the stat and water pump?

If it got to 220, do an entire WP kit (not much more) and make sure all the old vanes are still attached to the impeller.

At least pull the thermostat and test in hot water and/ or replace.

1986 was a good year for me. Met a group of girls from Holland that summer. They hung around for 3 months in NC.

Yes, indeed you do! Stat may not need replacing. As townsend mentioned, test in hot water to confirm its within spec. If its not, add a new one to your order for new pump kit.

After looking some more.... I do believe that this engine has RPM reduction for over temp and low level in oil tank. (So I was wrong again...)

The manual I looked in was for a 1984 50 ETN...but I think its the same manual for a 1986...could not find the exact models covered in the beginning pages...

Yes I believe so, overtemp protection cutting in.
