I think you will find after disassembly that several of the castings are "pretty bad"

this was mine, looking down after removing the powerhead



and then the oil pan once I had it all apart:

I've looked this post - well done. mine looks WAY better. Pics aren't good, but it's really no worse than what you see. Not sure I attached pic correctly - we'll see

I think that's the space between the exhaust plate and the oil pan cover that enters into the "labyrinth" pathway to the "idle port"

Looking at your pic's and his, obviously being where two surfaces come together, your correct...

Also looks like the gasket is used as a divider in between the two parts of some chambers..
Don't know if impressive is the word when one can see that the integrity of the sealing of chambers has it's days clearly numbered!
