      Variable pitch, kinda like auto feathering in a plane to keep the rpm ahead of the bite, if that makes sense...

          Yep, great idea and much simpler..

          Rotex, with off road 4 wheelers, some scooters (400 and 650 Suzuki), often use a wide belt for the drive that according to engine speed and speed of the vehicle, works as the gear box. The clutch will change its diameter accordingly to keep the engine in its efficient RPM range...

            Without looking, I assume the Nissan CVT works in a similar manner. Altima model etc. Weird feeling to drive those things the first time. Had a rental once

              Never drove one but haven't heard anything bad about them..

              The electronic controls, self parking, etc, is really amazing...

              I saw them operating on-line, very, very slick...

                Variable pitch props (VPP) are a realty for boating.
                Here's a link to a company that manufactures transducers to control VPP.

                Now for outboards, this may be a little down the road. Cost?
