that does not look like a 24 pin cable he is talking about,
    looks like a 9 pin

Will any ground work or do I need a specific ground?

The 24 pin is what attached to the VDO Cluster gauges.

"Ground is ground" - or should be

mmcbulletins_1.pdf Here is a document that I used. These are the gauges I removed and Installed all Sierra analog gauges. You go to the end of the doc and will see the wiring for the 24pin

Why are you not consulting with Sierra about their system?

              Yamaha system see Yamaha.

              Vendor system see vendor.

I did contact Sierra and he advised the pink is the wire from the trim sender for my model and year. I used the old diagram (24 pin) to find the wires needed to connect to the Sierra gauges. Is there a way to test with a meter for the trim signal?

I appreciate all the suggestions and reply's.

The 2001-and-later Yamaha trim sender is a simple variable resistor -
very similar to a fuel tank sender -
and a trim gauge works similarly to a fuel gauge.

The gauge outputs a con*****ed voltage to the pink wire,
and then "measures" how much current flows to ground,
                  through the trim sender,
as its resistance varies with engine position.

When the motor is fully down,
the sender resistance is at its lowest - typically ~ 10 ohms.
When the motor is fully up,
the sender resistance is at its highest -
maybe 200 ohms, it varies by motor model.

So having the correct ground wire is important to have the gauge work correctly?

                      Absolutely.
The gauge itself needs a ground to 'operate'
and the trim sender black wire needs to be grounded.

What I don't understand is that the trim worked in the old VDO Gauge cluster. So there must be a correct ground I'm missing. The Tach, Volt and fuel all work fine using the ground that is attached to the trim gauge.

what are connections on the trim gauge?
or which Sierra trim gauge is it and I'll try to look it up

There is the blue (Lights) Black (Ground), Ignition Power and the signal wire (Pink) Sierra Part# 105-57905 Thanks
