  • NEED HELP from the pros

Hi guys , I have a 2013 F225BETX (caribbean model) serial # 6AS-X-1003328B with 465 hrs on the motor. I do the 100 hr service myself as we live on a small island off the coast of Honduras and there are no "yamaha mechanics" certainly not certified. So the past 3 trips we have made to town which is 6 miles by boat I am running up on plane at 4200 rpm and its like someone just turned off the key !! dead, I put the motor in neutral turn the key to start it, Perfect, runs great, did our shopping, came out to the boat 4 hrs later, started home and into the journey about 1 mile , same thing, started it back up and came home without another incident , seems to do it 1 time per trip, maybe it will get worse / more often as time goes on. This motor is our car, we are boat access only and rely on this to survive, anyone have any clues to where or what it may be please ??? I dont think its water in the fuel, because it doesn't run rough, it like turning off the key every time it happens.....
    Please help if you can
    Thank you

Maybe check all battery cables/connections and ground connections.....may have a loose, or corroded connection...

You're right that it certainly doesn't sound fuel or air related - definitely seems electrical.

I would definitely start with the electrical connections - if for no other reason, it's good to do that once in a while and it will help to eliminate variables in trying to solve the issue. Start at the batteries and remove/inspect/clean/install/protect each connection you find on the way to the helm and the engine.

Next, while I don't know what type of "kill switch" you have, I have experienced what you are seeing due to a "slightly" cracked kill switch lanyard "key". It wasn't obvious, but it was cracked just enough to be loose enough to occasionally allow the kill switch to open. The key switch is another thing to check out... loose/dirty connections... possibly failing internals?

good chance the fuel pump in the VST ran out of fuel.
need to monitor fuel pressures to see if a pump is not pumping when it should be( loss of electrical connection) or sucking air causing VST level to be too low
being it does not happen often, I would be looking at electrical myself

Thank you all for the suggestions, however, 99yam40, I hope what you mentioned is not the case, I have NO clue what that is nor where to look...

Problem SOLVED, took it for a 14 mi run yesterday after cleaning the battery connections and NO issues ! Can't believe that little but of corrosion on the + lug would do that but it's obvious now,,,, it did..
Thanks to ALL for the tips and suggestions..... Ken

Wait... don't jinx yourself by saying it's fixed after just one run. I hope it is, though. Yeah, electrical connections are very important - especially for newer engines. It's possible the lug was a little loose, too. Take a few minutes, though, and do the rest of the connections - it's time well spent, at the dock, rather than trying to do it in the water somewhere. Cover the connections with a spray-on terminal protector, or at least a coating of grease. If you keep up with keeping them clean and protected, you "shouldn't" have this issue again.
