yam mfd hot wire hookup? Nav lights

whoever setup the mfd display(tach oil water) for my 2001 150hp hpdi motor has spliced into the switch for my nav lights for electrical power. this seems like a stupid route for electrical power and i want to run mfd power wire directly to its own fuse on the fuse panel. Isn't that how it should be done ? any suggestions ?

The gauges get power(yellow wire) and ground from key switch(key turns power off to gauges) The blue wire for backlight in gauge connects to nav light switch to turn gauge lights on when boat lights are on.
