  • 2003 40hp 2 Stroke - will not idle

My 2003 40hp 2 stroke starts up, but kills as the RPM goes down. It dies when in idle. At high speeds, runs fine.
I cleaned out the fuel filter on the engine.
I replaced the WaterSepartor filter on the gas line.
(The waterSeparator filter did have rust in it.)
I emptied out the Gas Tank and put new gas in it.
I removed the three (3) screws on the Carberutor and drained
    out the gas from those.
I did not notice any trash when the three (3) screws were removed.

Reconnected everything but still the same results.
Any suggestions on how to remedy the idle problem.
Is there an Idle adjustment screw on the Engine?
Is there a product that I can put in the Gas to use to clean out
    possible dirt in Carburetor.
Is there a way to check to see if the idle jet is clogged?

Thanks for any remedies to try.

Time to rebuild the carbs--no quick way around it........

      same problem

I have same problem. I took apart the carb and sprayed carb cleaner through all the valves. It now will idle better for about a minute, then the rpms will drop to around 500 and it will sputter and die. Will "rebuilding" the carb really solve the problem? My motor is 2004, does not seem like it should require rebuilding yet.

        Clean the jets

My 40 was erratic at idle with some stalling . Temporarily raised the idle to get by
Today took the three carbs float chambers apart & removed the jets & blew out . Reassembled & everything now good . I think I was some crap in the lowest carb jet that is exposed without removing the rubber plug. I removed rubber plug & blew that jet clear too. I made some pictures but this is really simple work so not likely needed == Ask if you want them. I don't think a rebuild is warranted Good luck
