Rebuilding lower unit shift linkage

Has anybody done a rebuild on lower unit shift linkage on a Yamaha Vmax 200? If so how hard and do I need any special tools? I really don't want to spend $900 on a rebuilt init just for a linkage problem.

Yes you will need special tools and a service manual. If gears or bearings are replaced it will need to be reshimmed.

What is wrong with shift linkage?

It won't come out of drive. With lower unit off the spline won't turn.
