1984 mariner yamaha 30 h.p. foot

I bought this motor new in 1984,while running down the lake i felt a slight vibration and lost all power.The engine ran great but would not go forward or backward.I had a new slip clutch installed in the propeller but that was not the problem.The rod to the foot moves but you do not hear it clunk when you place it in gear as you normally do.Any help would be appreciated,also what type of sealer should be used when bolting the foot to the housing?

Remove the lower unit and see if it shifts at lower unit if not then problem is in the lower unit.
