  • prop shaft

i have a 26 foot sundancer tritoon with a 1997 yamaha prov 150 on it.
i banged my prop and want to know how much play there should be in the shaft.i put a dial indicator on the shaft and rotated it by hand,it had .0006 play at the end and .0003 play up close to the seal area.
it runs around 5400 rpm on top end. im worried the seal will give out and leak all the lube out, and we know what happens after that.i have replaced the prop and can not feel any vibration and there is no oil or water leak on the lower unit.should i keep an eye on it or change it ???

The service manual doesn't list those specs for that but that seems to be ok.

odds are real good that your prop took the beating and your shaft is fine. this is especially true if your old prop was aluminum, composite or plastic, since all these bend and break so easily. just run it and then remove the prop and look for leaks...a good neoprene rubber seal can easily take a few ten thousandths of an inch out of round without damage...in fact they most all do..Good luck!
