  • 2003 Yamaha Fuel Issue

I have seen a few post about fuel issues but no clear resolution to some problems. My 225 runs OK above about 3000 rpm but will not stay running at low RPM. I have replaced fuel filters which had significant water and problem still exist. I can hear low pressure pump kick on about every 20 seconds when it will run but not sure it is coming on when the engine goes through a phase of shutting down at low RPM. Went out last night and ran for 1 hour at high RPM but the engine died coming back to the dock at idle speed. Runs only if you pump the primer and rev up the RPM's.

Would a bad low pressure pump work eratically or should I look elsewhere?

Could be low on compression, low pressure fuel pumps, low VST fuel pressure, if it has water in fuel then clean VST.

      cleaning vst

How difficult is it to clean the vst in the yamaha 225? What tips can you provide and is their anything in particular I should be looking for?

check motor filter level when this happens

unbolt lp pumps, leave hoses intact, pump ball, if fuel comes out of vac port, replace that lp pump.

sounds like motor is starving for fuel when at higher demand.
