  • 1997 C40 tilt motor is bad, need help

The tilt motor is bad on our motor. I cannot get the valve relief screw to turn and the head of it is all stripped now. Is there another way to release pressure on the tilt cylinder so I can tilt the motor up? I can't get the tilt motor off unless I can get the outboard up.

Or is there another tool (other than the assortment of flat blade screwdrivers I have) that can be used to turn that relief screw. It's got a very wide slot, but there's not enough room in the side of the bracket to get a fat screwdriver through there.

    THanks,
    DB

Have had this same problem on a couple of my motors, one way is to heat up the screw housing with a blow torch, another way that I have found to help release bolts etc is to use an inpact driver/wrench but tighten it slightly before you unscrew it, managed to break off +-4 gearbox/leg bolts before I learned this trick

Manual Impact driver. Purchase at auto parts store--you hit it with a hammer.
