oil pump problem

have a 175 yamaha .1992 year model wich all of a sudden starts to pump oil from main tank to tank under hood and obviusly dont understand when to stop so oil floods into gassystem and over the edge of the innertank so motor becomes flooded with oil and start to smoke and stops , any idea what this could be caused by ?
