i presently own a 2001 yamaha 8 h.p. that is used on a achilles 10.2raft. i would like to get a little more umph out of it without major surgery or sacrificing the life of the motor. would a prop change help? carb change? or bite the bullet and buy the 9.9 thanks guy

The easiest way to get more bottom end power is to lower the pitch of the prop. Unfortunately the trade off may be the top end of your boat.
As for making changes with the carb..it is really not something that you would want to mess with, Jetting is very important and if not done properly, you can ruin an engine.
Is 9.9 the max that your boat supports?
The reason I ask is that you will not see much of a performance gain by going up the 1.9hp.
Make the jump to 15hp if you can, this would be an ideal combination.
I have sold loads of 10ft inf with 15hp engines.
Just be sure to check the tag on the boat to make sure it supports the additional hp.
