Yamaha 115hp starter

I have a 2001 115hp Yamaha, The starter gear spins, but does not shoot up to engage the flywheel. My batteries are freshly charged, and my cable connections are tight and not corroded. Any ideas about a possible fix, before I buy a new starter. It had been working, and occaisonally failing to engage the flywheel, but now it is constant. I greased the area where the pinion gear moves.... maybe a little too late?

It probably needs a new starter. Have the battery load tested.

could be wick't cables also.

Cables may be corroded or broken under insulation.
