cooked charge coil

1988 pro50 2-stroke Can anyone tell me what would cause the Charge Coil to burn up .Replaced old coil and ran engine with new coil about 5min it got so hot you could not touch it .Dont think it`s rubbing flywheel. Thanks pro50

Check it for shorts to ground and make sure it is not rubbing flywheel.

You should have continuity between brown and blue wire but no continuity between brown or blue to ground. There shouldn't be much if any side tp side play on stator plate, if you do may need to replace plate and plastic ring.
