  • Why is my 1984 25hp 2-stroke overheating?

I have a 1984 25hp 2-stroke Yamaha outboard. I continue to have overheating problems. It will generally run full tilt for about 20 minutes before it shuts down. I've replaced the impeller 2x so I don't think that's the problem. Does it have a thermostat that might not be functioning? Is there a hose that might be clogged? HELP!

Yes you have a thermostat there on top of the cylinder head, the cover is held on with 10mm bolts. If you've never changed it I would run by the dealer and pickup a new one and new gasket and change it ( part # 6H7-12411-01-00 ). Use a new gasket too. Clean out any mineral buildup inside the housing and use a quality torque wrench to re-torque the retaining bolts, it only take about 20 inch lbs of torque. They break easy. If you don't have a service manual for your motor you can get one from www.Yamahapubs.com and they'll mail it to your door. You need a properly functioning thermostat in the system to regulate powerhead temperature, don't leave it out.
