40hp reverse

When I push the throttle towards reverse, I get a clicking noise and the gear is slow to engage. Sounds like it's slipping.

How long do I have and is it expensive to repair?

sounds to me youre not fully engaged...undo the gear cable on the motor,put in gear manually....if you still have clicking ,you may have an issue. does the motor have a shift shaft that may be weak,rusting and not fully engaging the gears?
