I'm replacing my lower unit and when I took it off I noticed that rod appeared to be corroded and I was wondering if it should also be replaced and the difficulty associated with the replacement. This is a 1990 200 hp yamaha. I guess this is the upper shift rod. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

is it rusted? how bad? if its not real bad, try wire brushing and painting it. you may get another year out of it.

well most will tell you that you have to remove the powerhead but if you have verticle and not horizontal reeds, you can pull the intake off instead. lots faster and lots cheaper.
