  • reverse jumpin out of gear.

    hello all,
    new to the site.
i bought a houseboat and converted the inboard to a 99 75hp yamaha.
i forgot to check the reverse for jumpin out of gear before i bout it, and shure enough it does.
my question is could the shift cable bein out of adjustment( to far to foward) cause reverse to jump in and out of gear when a heavy load is put on it.
any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    gweedo.

unhook the cables, run in driveway and engage by hand. it if stays in then it is just an adjustment on cable...if it still jumps out, then you may have a lower unit problem.

hey jb123, thanks for the reply.
it was only jumpin out with a load on it, if i go easy in reverse it doesnt jump out so i dont know how i can check it out of the water, but the next im i go to the water i will try your way. good idea ,thanks.

wanted to let everyonw know it was my cable.
i switched them ( throttle and shift) an now it stays in gear and the throttle is terrible.
        deffinatly worn out cable.
got to take it all apart one more time.

        fun fun.
