  • Choosing a Propeller

For a Cape Dory Typhoon Junior 18'6" day sailer, I have an 8 hp Yamaha longshaft outboard. The boat is a short and fat (but pretty!) Carl Alberg design weighing about 2200 lbs. Could you please tell me what the general consensus is regarding the correct choice of size and pitch of propeller?

    Hi Osprey
OK I will take a crack at this one... Looks like you will have at least a 3000 lb load on this boat with people and some gear. An 8HP will never win a race on this sail boat. I would go for power, lower pitch will be needed to push thru currents and wind. You will need to have the power. I doubt you will ever exceed the recomended RPM. I would guess a 9 or 10 pitch is the lowest pitch avail. Always check with the local shop.. Boat.net the sponsor will be able to assist.
