  • grinding noise when shifting

200hp, 1988 yamaha runs great, 1400 rpm when in neutral, grinding noise when shifted to forward or reverse.

Idle adjust?, shift cable adjust? if so please explain how.

    Please help. TIA

yes your idle is way to high. it should be 800 in neutral. it might be to late and you may need a new clutch dog in the lower unit.how are you shifting it from neutral into gear? fast or slow. you should be "popping it into gear as fast as possible but not giving it any throttle. it takes some getting used to but this is the correct way to shift. start off by lowering the idle.

the idle screw on the starboard side of #2 carb. its pointing straight down. you need to back it out. im affraid that it might be to late for your clutch dog and gears though. you might have to replace them anyway. do you shift fast or slow?
