• 175 ETXG 1988 not running right

I had a problem last year right at the end with bad gas, so i cleaned the carbs and i got a new fuel pump. This year i had fresh gas, and it started up, idled a little rough but smoothed out, and i was able to get it into gear ( all in my driveway) before it would over heat.

So i bring my boat down to the water, put it in, and start it up. Engine runs ok at half throttle, but as soon as i tried to let it idle it would die. I started and did this about 10 times, and every time i went into nuteral it would stall out. I can't even get it to engage in gear.

Does this sound like a CDI problem or something else?

sony,
You probably have carbs that are a bit clogged with gum/varnish.
Try a shock treatment with SeaFoam or RingFree first - sometimes that works.
If not, then remove all the jets that you can get to and squirt some Berryman's Chemtool into the orifices.
It that doesn't work, then you will need to tear down the carbs, clean, and install a carb kit.
And if you haven't already done so, install a 10 micron water separating fuel filter in the fuel line.
Good luck ,
