  • Newbie Help - Fuel System?

1989 Yamaha Pro50 is shutting down at higher RPM's. Motor cranks and idles fine. Once it gets to around 4k, starts sounding rough, loses power and dies. Then it's hard to crank for a few minutes (mimics a dead battery, but battery is ok). Changed spark plugs, no help. Fuel filter or pump possibly? Not sure where to start.

    thanks,

I'm not going to pretend to know how to solve the problem, but it does sound similar to what's wrong with my engine right now! Maybe you could try the responses I've had? I haven't had time to check them yet, but they sound good:

I stopped by a Yamaha Service Center at lunch today and they told me the following:

Put the boat in the water and run until it starts cutting out. Pump the bulb on the fuel line and if the engine starts going again, it's a fuel pump problem.

If pumping the bulb does not help, hit the choke. If that helps the engine get going again, it's a carb problem.

        I'm trying this afternoon (hopefully).
