so its not "off, one, or both"

    its "off, on, or both"

    (just a difference of a single "e")

FWIW that is the battery switch supplied in the Blue Sea "Add-a-battery kit"

essentially a DPST, plus a "combine" option.

Boscoe doesn't approve. I have one; it doesn't worry me.

And we still haven't solved the OP's problem.

Wonder why it is not a 1-2-both switch?

      Or does it matter?

Voltage drop testing should sniff out a bad switch....

Challenge is to identify before buying a switch to rule it out, right?

It is not a matter of Boscoe approving or disapproving. It is just that Boscoe is not going to turn his battery switch to the both position if Boscoe's primary battery has failed, and the reason for such failure is unknown. If the start up of Boscoe's motor depends upon the alternate battery being able to function as intended that is.

Boscoe believes that a primary start battery should be paralleled with a house battery only when the engine driven generator is providing an electrical output. Or if the alternate battery alone won't start the motor.

This is called an operating procedure. As opposed to something happening at sea without any idea at all as to what to do next.

I was expecting to read of a solution to the OP's problem.
