    You gotta love the marketing folks. They sit around not actually creating anything of usefulness, but rather just scheme of ways to mislead the sheeple into thinking a product is better than it really is. But then the sheeple are at fault also because they/we don't think and do their/our research.

    Two ways to look at some carburetors. Is extra gasoline added at high power settings to prevent something bad from happening or is less gasoline added at mid-power settings for better fuel economy? The marketing boys will spin on the latter every time. In bold new graphics they will proclaim "our motors use less fuel at cruise RPM to save you, our valuable customer, mucho dinero."

      kinda like Volvo penta with the drive line saver.
      yes the upper to lower shaft has a coupler with a machined groove that is designed to shear.
      however I typically replace it while repairing the gear set.

      however marketing calls it a drive line saver.

            the mercrusier bravo units just use a splined coupler. and yes I have replaced a few twisted couplers.
            while doing a gear set.

              How are these guys tearing these parts up???

              I've ran aground hard (soft bottom thou), and never broke anything, anything....

                hit a sea turtle with a duo prop.
                wrap up a crab pot at speed with a 420 HP 8.1L.
                that piece of 3/8ths rebar makes a mess and stops the prop.
                hit a partially submerged water logged piling that is bobbing just under the surface.

                it is a marketing ploy about the rubber prop hub giving.
                that is all about the cost of manufacture.
                don't believe it look at what a bravo 3 prop costs.

                  One of the sons of owner at a auto dealership I worked at in the 70s had a go fast boat with twin 454 special built motors out of California that kept shearing the flex plates. So he had us drill and mount regular flywheels in them.
                  he started tearing up out drives after that instead of flex plates

                    Actually, the Bravo III props don't even have a rubber/plastic prop hub. They're all metal to metal.

                      they are indeed all one piece.
                      makes the machining cost skyrocket.
                      with a rubber hub you can be off center a bit on the bore to blade and the hub will center itself.
                      guess what if you machine the splined bore on a bravo off center?

                        Then that mistake (and "gotta start all over") is passed on to consumers through higher prices?

                        In all seriousness, I never thought of it that way (the pricing of a B3 prop compared to others). That's a good point as to why they are more expensive.
