That Parker Yacht feller on another forum mentioned something I thought interesting. OP over there had a rotten anode where some of the crusties fell back into the water passages. Parker says his shop will run the motor for 5-10 minutes without the thermostats or covers. Fresh water on the muffs. Helps to flush out the junk.

I do that all the time, we have lots of bay boats which means sand in the block, flushes it out pretty good.
