  • Leaky trim/ tilt but works fine

Topped off reservoir, which wasn't low at all, and now get an occasional leak out top of trim cylinder. Unit works fine. What's up with that ?

Anyone got a good line on a cheap tool to get the cap off ?

Looked for a cheap tool and never found one. You will have to put probably 120 lb ft of torque on that cap to break it free. Cheap might get you hurt...

if you are just going to replace the seals then the cap doesn't have to come off . Pick the old plastic seal out , and gently push the new seal in place.

that is not a seal at the top
I believe it is a wiper

One of the big advantages of pulling the caps and rams is that it allows access. Mainly to inspect and vacuum the old fluid out of the unit. Leaky seals may mean water in fluid.

If it's only an "occasional leak" and unit is "working fine" maybe just leave it alone, check/add fluid level as needed....lots of hydraulic systems have some fluid loss with time...power steering gearbox on my car lost some fluid for many years before I had it replaced....

The curse was checking the fluid and topping it off. Never have checked it in the 3 year 500 hours I've owned it. Strange that it only leaks occasionally. Maybe when it gets down to the original level it will stop.

Come to find out, my seastar tool fits the tilt cap perfectly. But not the trim caps. 1994 200 hp

Tilt cap is usually Double the torque of the trim caps.

                    Seems like overkill to me.....

My SM says 50 pounds for trim and 58 for tilt.
Anyone know if the back up ring and the free piston are wear parts ?

For a 200? Those torque values make a lot more sense than my F150. @57 and 100+....

                          depends on the unit.
the showa unit uses a wiper on the trim caps.
if it leaks it is a piston oring problem.
not all Yamaha trim units worked the same.
