  • Lower Unit Oil Leak From Ports

Changed the lower unit oil early December. Have used about twice in December and twice in January. This week noticed lower unit oil coming from the ports in the picture. Didn't notice this after previous uses in December and Jan. Is it possible it was filled too much? Any other ideas? I was going to fish tomorrow, not sure if it is something that has to be addressed before use.

if it is in fact gear lube, the driveshaft or shift shaft is leaking.

I would check the drain for water before using it again

Thanks for the help. Maybe I will drain a bit of oil to see if any water comes out or if it is milky before any use. Am thinking any water would likely settle to the bottom? The oil out of the ports up top is for sure lower unit oil and looks like when it went in. Regardless, looks like it will have to get checked out sooner rather than later.

I guess if the screw in pic was not removed when filling you could pop a seal on shifter or driveshaft....

are you absolutely sure it is lower unit lube?
does it smell like LU oil?

It sure smells and looks like it. Has a bit of a clear yellow appearance as opposed to motor oil color.

not much matchs the smell of lower unit lube.
So if it has the smell then it is
