the problem we found with most silicone sealants is heat and oil or fuel softens them.
sometimes to the failure point when the excess that is oozed inside falls of and clogs things.

I won't mention how the shop put jb weld on the motor then.

As for the balancers they said they had been replaced prior to me ever taking it to them.

On a side note, how can I stop my lower unit from sounding like it's on the edge of going into gear. It makes a bad ratcheting when going into gear while the motor is running.

not the first nor likely the last motor I will ever JB weld.

had a 2001 F200 that a tiny steel core plug rusted through.
        two ways to fix it.
remove the head and drill and tap OR clean it up and JB the ell out of it.
        lasted about 3 yrs .
        did it again.

same as an F50 head that had corroded.
sent it down to Flagship in Punta Gorda FL.
Jeff called and said the damage was more than they were comfortable welding.Jeff said they could epoxy it and surface it.

it was for a dear friend that had no money and has since passed away .

        so I said do it.
        I think I paid about 200 bucks.

        lasted about 3 years.

put another head on it and old man Bill got a few more paychecks that summer ,passed away just before thanksgiving that year.
motor is still going strong on another friends boat.

the epoxied head did not fail, I thought it did but it was an internal anode broke off and blocking the discharge water from exiting the block.

            shift it like a man.
it is a slam shift not a girly shift.
faster you flick it in gear WITHOUT throttling up the happier it is.
however if it is ticking while in N there is an issue.

It clack in neutral and no matter how aggressive I shift into forward or reverse it sounds like I'm learning to drive a stick shift again.

I will say I changed the lower unit oil and I swear I put more in than I got out.

putting in more than ya got out is not abnormal.

however it most likely means the upper driveshaft seal garter spring has failed.

Do the controls slide easy? I thought it was me until I spent 20 minutes installing new cables ordered online and delivered to the front door.

depends on how the life insurance policy is written.

It would mean you have your motor idling to fast

when you have to do a full throttle hood off test when you are on the transsome, make sure you can trust the helmsman.
I got tossed in the elizibeth river not far from NAS Norfolk at 55 MPH.
                              never saw it coming.
lost my keys shoes yet I came up still holding the screwdriver and my glasses.

Not sure if I should make a new thread or leave on this one so I'll put it here.

I am already going to replace the water pump and the thermostat. The injectors were cleaned right before I bough the boat (I have the paperwork on it). So let me have a list of what else I should check / change on the motor to make sure I'm running good. It looks like I won't be going fishing on it any time soon since I have to get the parts a little at a time. This month is going to be the thermo and the water pump.

                                Thanks for all the help.

On a side note, do I need to drain the lower unit to change the water pump since I just did that?

                                Things to check
                                1. Pressure relief valve
                                2. Check spark plugs
                                3. check anodes

                                Ordered
                                1. water pump kit
                                2. thermostat
