  • Shift linkage/gear grind

I've got a Yamaha 25hp outboard that I just replaced the water pump in. When I started it to check things out it had a tick/grind in the gears. An Internet search got me here and pointed me in the right direction. The foot wasn't completely in reverse when I dropped it, apparently. A push on the rod and a turn of the prop got it right. Sometimes a little guidance is all someone needs. Especially a stubborn person that thinks it was right in the first place(me).
I'll bookmark this site for sure. Thanks.

      just remember.
that barrel nut is NOT an adjustment.
it is simply a shift rod connector.

His post could be the best I've ever read lol.

No doubt the drive shaft-shift shaft linkage is a pain on those smaller engines. If yall can remember, I became a member on this forum bc I was experiencing the same issue with my then engine, '98 25hp. First time I replaced the water pump on that engine I couldn't engage reverse. It boggled me for hours.
