  • 2004 Yamaha 150 VMAX Water Pump

Does the water pump (not referring to the water pick-up, but the water pump itself) need to be below the surface of the water to pick up and pump water when at idle?

I have heard different opinions and not sure what to believe.

Yes, for best results the water pump needs to be submerged under water. It pushes water a whole lot better than it will pull water. Particularly when the impeller is dry.

Now once the motor is started and running, and the boat is on plane. it is a different situation.
