1989 175 ETXF Prop shaft Seals - How many?

amahaork, that is what I did for the inner seal. I was unable to get it out by poking at it, so I actually used a long 1/8 " bit , drilled opposite side and used pan head sheet metal screws. Used a pry bar to gently remove them. Worked like a charm

If I were to do it again, I would use the drill/screw method.

it is a better way to remove old seals: using 1/16 drill make two holes on opposite sides of shaft, screw into holes two screws, and use pliers for screw heads pull seals out. but again, everyone has its own way to get same result.

Many thanks. You were both right on the money. When I compared what I took out to the new seal, there was not enough, so part of the seal must still be in there. So I put on my big boy pants and removed what I was looking at.
Sure enough, there is a metal housing in the rubber of the seal. Well, I got it out and I am now looking at the inner seal.

if it is not deep enough for two seals, i would look into possibility that what you see as a metal ring may be leftover metal ring from earlier seal replacement, however weird that seal was installed wrong side out. keep investigating.

It IS showing two seals:

1989 175ETXF Yamaha Outboard LOWER DRIVE 1 Diagram and Parts which are identical.

Is there not enough area for the second seal to push into??

Are you sure you got the entire seal out, that perhaps, that may be the remnant of one?

In any case, I'd pick up two, and examine what you already got out, to the new one...
That should tell the story. The parts fisch doesn't show a retainer ring.

As the title reads, I have a 1989 175 ETXF that I am replacing the prop shaft seals. I already replaced the driveshaft and shift seals). Everything I read shows there are 2 seals to replace on the prop shaft. However, when I removed the first one, there seems to be a metal ring spacer and only 1 seal.
Because this is a salt water boat, I am trying to remove / replace the seals with the shaft on.

Here are 2 photos of the carrier, with the seal ( 1) removed. Can anyone advise me? ( I really dont want to remove the carrier from the LU, as I know something big will break.
