  • 1989 Yamaha 130HP oil leking HELP

I have black oil leaking down the outside of the lower unit . Its leaking out from the bottom of the cowl apron and looks like from where the powerhead meets the lower unit? Any info will be very appreciative.
Here is a link to a picture of a motor that looks like it has the same problem. My motor is leaking like this but from the opposite side , toward the front.

black oil means it is not clean 2 stroke oil from the pump seal , so maybe lower crankshaft seal.
But that should be clean 2 stroke oil also. so not sure where black oil would come from

maybe explain what you are calling lower unit shaft would help.
only shaft I can think of it the drive shaft

Can you de-grease the area real good?

Then run it some and keep watching for the closest origin...

Coming out from under part #27?

A posted pic could be helpful too...(before cleaning)

Yes. Its leaking from the bottom of part #27. Also it seems like it leaking around part #31 rubber seal.
I have pics just cant figure out how to upload them.

I'm thinking the lower crank seal as well... There's not much else it could be.

Being black oil, I suspect it just being internal parts being "washed down"(and leaking out vs burning off) with fuel/oil. The engine is close to 20 years old and seals do fail, especially over time..

And for the OP, ANY CHANGE with the engine idle, maybe slightly higher than normal? Just for S&G's, pull the spark plugs and see if the lower plug looks any different than the others..

Also, I'd rather see a pic of YOUR engine. If you can post to Photobucket, then use "Image", second from the bottom(copy and paste here) and it'll show: http://s176.photobucket.com/

***(That pic posted could be exhaust leak with oil dripping(looks very much like exhaust fumes with some oil mixed)

            .

The black is carbon from the exhaust
