  • my tach quit on my pontoon

I have a 40hp Yamaha 4 stroke and the tack quit, is the rectifier gone bad?

By far the most frequent tachometer problem is bad electrical connections. I even found a white paper saying the same thing. They're also the cheapest to fix. I find the connections on the back side of the tach are buggers.

I did check all the wiring first. then I checked the voltage output and it was also low, then pulled the rectifier and it had leaked out on the corner a bit so I'll order a new one and try that.

Another step to rule out if it's just a wiring issue or a bad tach is to connect tach power wire and ground wire to battery. This just bypasses the harness connecting ignition to tach. If tach comes on then it's good and start testing connections. If it doesn't come on then time to invest in a new one.
