  • Cleaning water jackets/passages

I have run into an overheat issue on an 90 etlh (1987). I have pulled the head to clean the build up around the cylinders and found it was not very bad at all. Do I need to pull the exhaust cover as well and look for a blockage? I have broken a couple bolts in the block that I was able to drill out and I was able to re-tap them with a 1/4x20 thread rather than the M8x1.25 that was there originally... Is this going to suffice or do I need to keep drilling and install a heli-coil? Also do I need to pull the powerhead to remove the cowling? I know I am going to break bolts on the exhaust cover if that needs to come off and we all know it will be the ones below the cowling!
