  • Engine oil

I have a 2006 150 4 stroke. I use my boat mainly for fishing and put at most 50 hours per year. My motor very seldom if ever see full throttle. I change the engine oil yearly. I have been using mobil 1 synthetic engine oil. Is synthetic the best choice in my case. What oil do you recommend.

    If I only put on 50 hrs /year, I wouldn't bother with a synthetic.

But I would go with a labeled FC-W oil,

because maybe it would have optimal rust-prevention coverage

The only time I would use a synthetic is if the manufacturer specifically called for it as the only option. I know that some of the newer engines (catalyst) supposedly require it. But that's not to say that it's "bad" to use a synthetic - just not really necessary.

The bigger factor, as mentioned above, is using an FC-W rated, marine oil. From what I gather, some non-rated oils could actually provide the same protection, but they have not gone through the testing process to get that rating. For me, I'm not going to second guess - I'd rather be safe than sorry.
