Years ago I was amaze how fast black powder burned when I touched off a small pile I was getting rid of with a lit cigarette

It was nothing like the smokeless powders

yep a cup full of smokeless lit on the floor is rather unimpressive.

however I would not try a cup full of black powder that way.

same with octane ratings of various fuels and fuel additive packages.

they are designed for a specific burn rate and a known pressure and temperature.

I got a friend that poured a keg of slow burn smokeless powder on the floor and asked if I wanted to see it burn. I said I'd rather run to the end of the street before he lit it. Because he is a non drinker I felt that he knew what he was doing, so I stayed.
Not a large flame at all, but I was amazed at the amount of gas volume it produced.
Not like the gun powder that was available when I was a kid!
