  • starter problem

I have a 2006 25 hp yamaha outboard. When i push the starter button, it just clicks and the gear does not go up to the flywheel sometimes. If i just spin the starter gear by hand and then push the starter button, it usually starts like it should. It does this more and more often. Do i need to buy a new starter or is it something else?

If it was mine, I would take the starter apart, clean it up, and lube it to see if that helped

I'd be checking ALL your electrical connections, as in R&R (not just looking) starting at the battery.

Work back from the battery including ALL grounds, etc...

Disconnect the main wire from the starter, then put 12 volts direct (positive) to the starter(with ground to block), It should spin over if the starter is working properly.

If it doesn't (and the grounds are good), +1 as 99Yam40 posted above...

The above, and you may have worn out brushes in your starter motor, so check them.
