  • 2005 F225 Voltage Issue and Running Issue

To give some back story I run a jetski repair shop on the side. Very mechanically inclined but not much outboard experience. I have a neighbor/buddy that has a pontoon boat with a 2005 Yamaha F225 that has been giving him issues. I was told it had been recently "serviced" by a boat shop down the road from us but I don't trust them as far as I could throw the boat. Looked like oil change was all they did.

Anyways the issue he claimed was surging at speed. I decided after some quick reading to do fuel filters throughout including inside the VTS and the "F" filter as well as spark plugs. He took it out after and it ran great the first time out but later that day still had a surge at speed and a rough (low) idle. I decided to take it for a spin myself the next day. Started right up and idled perfectly the whole way out the no wake zone. Once out of the no wake zone I hit it and could tell it had a slight bog. It struggled to reach 5000ish rpm as well. Not sure what his setup is supposed to max out but feels like it should have more in it. It's a tritoon though so maybe not. It was around this time I happened to look at the voltage gauge and see it was at 16v. Come down to idle and it is 14v. Second rpms go up it rises back to 16v which is pegged on the gauge.

I am not sure if the voltage and running issues are directly related however I have seen bad voltage regulators cause running issues in skis before. I plan to confirm high voltage and order a regulator. I will definitely check battery connections as well. I also want to do a test drive with someone else onboard to squeeze the fuel bulb while it is acting up to see if that changes the running issues at all.

Wondering if anyone else has any opinions before I go throwing an expensive voltage regulator at it? Anyone seen high voltage cause these running issues on one of these?

I would definitely confirm voltage with a meter. Some boat mounted gauges are wonky. Fuel issues are the first place I would start. I believe that model may have a valve on rail to measure fuel pressure. Pumping the ball also good t
