What is this "dust" ? - F225 camshaft gear

    I doubt it.
    yes I have seen that fail.
    its NOT a slow fail.
    its some kinda nylon. when it cracks its like glass.
    keep hunting rabbits.

      so - new camshaft gear installed.

      The "tapping" sound that I had been hearing at idle is GONE.

      Engine is back to running "like a sewing machine"

      Happy Ending.

          Is the red "dust" re-appearing at all since the replacement pulley?

            No red dust so far, about 4 hours running time.

            To be fair, I also put on a new belt, so that's "a second variable".

            But, given the "loose rattle" of the steel washer inside the original gear as seen here

            it seems certain that the plastic material was being worn away, internally, as the gear rotated.

            And neither the original starboard pulley, nor the new one, has any "looseness" to that mounting washer.
