  • 1997 Yami 30 hp stator plate sticking?!?

    Hey there,

    Just put together a boat with an old yamaha 30 hp 2 stroke...

    When I advance the throttle, the arm that advances the magneto forward with the throttle is sticking.. So i did:

    - removed throttle arm and linkage (with the internal machine spring) took it all apart, cleaned and greased

    - took off the flywheel, removed the stator and plates
    - found old grease and not a lot of it
    - inspected all parts and looked good.. even the nylon ring
    - cleaned everything
    - out new marine grease on everything

    When I put it all together the arm is still not advancing when I put the throttle forward... hmmm... ???.... everything is still too tight!

    Does anyone have an idea why this is?

      Should have tested it with the flywheel off.
      If it was easy to remove do so again and see where it is grabbing.
      At a guess, if the problem is not that it is not seated properly, maybe the magnet is locking a loose plate.
      Does the engine turn over without binding/scrapping?

        Besides the above, bring up the engine in the PARTS FISCH (listed above in red). Make sure your not missing any parts or have an extra washer(etc) where it doesn't belong... Keep an eye for "wave washers" that may not be installed correctly and are binding up..

        Not sure of your specific model but here's a parts fisch for a 97 30 HP;
