  • Question about 2019 Yamaha F40LA Thermostat Bolts.

I have a 2019 Yamaha F40LA outboard. I am planning to change the thermostat and the service manual notes a 2 stage torque (4.4 lbs.-ft. & then 8.2 lbs.-ft..). The manual does not note Loctite or grease. Just re-install and torque to this spec.

My question is "should the bolt threads be greased?) If so, should the torque specs. be reduced by 20% for the grease application? That cover will crack if it is over tightened and I understand why the manual notes a two stage torque to seat the gasket.

Lastly, should grease be applied to the back of the gasket to position it in place? I am planning on buying new bolts and just follow the service manual instructions. Not sure if they are required but just planning to take the precaution. Otherwise, should the old bolt threads can be cleaned and the mating threads cleaned before torqueing to spec.?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

I normally clean the threads on the bolts and the hole before reinstalling.
    clean is a good thing
