  • 2005 F50 Lower Unit Oil Seal Leak

I bought a hand pump tester, wouldn't even pump up to 5 pounds, soapy water shows leaking around shift shaft. Not much of a mechanic, would appreciate some guidance before I break anything. What are the steps needed to fix this? How does that oil seal housing come out?

    The black housing -
    Yamaha calls it "plate" -
has been simply forced into place,
    with the o-ring around it,
    its a snug fit.

You can try clamping vice-grips to each of those "ears"
and then prying against them to pull it out.

    Personally, for <$7.00
    I would buy a new plate -
so not worrying about chewing up the old one, getting it out -

and of course you'll need the oil seal and the O-ring.

    Going back together:
the new shaft seal gets pressed into the plate,
the O-ring worked into the groove of the plate,
and then the plate gets pressed (gently hammered?) back in to the LU
    Mind the orientation...

Alright then, I got that plate out, and new parts ordered. Anything special I need to know about installing the new one? Specifically, this old one looks like it has some kind of leftover hardened liquid gasket or something on it...
