Tilt Seal Replacement - 1988 Yamaha 90ETLG

I am replacing the seals on the tilt trim unit and cannot figure out how to remove the shaft from the base on the main piston. I see that there is a small dowel cotter pin there and have attempted to pull it out but am having a tough time. I have looked at a few parts diagrams for the engine and the shaft I have looks like one from a 1986 model. I confirmed the engine model number 90ETLG and am thinking that maybe they have changed out the tilt trim. The P/N on the tilt trim assembly is 6H1-108B-0095. Any help is appreciated.

Don't mess with that tiny roll pin!
its not holding the piston to the shaft -
its keeping a ball trapped -
that's a valve.

"usually" the piston is threaded on -
but I can't speak specifically to that model...
