  • coil problem?

my 1998 yamaha 2 cyl 2 stroke outboard has started intermittently loosing power from cylinder number 2. It comes and goes so i'm thinking of swaping coils to see if the problem also moves to cyl number 1. Any other ideas?

check your fuel pump, if leaking into the crankcase it can keep it from firing properly from being overly rich

how do you know it is #2?

When the problem occurs the engine runs the same with cyl #2 plug wire connected or disconnected. Of course with cyl# 1 disconnected it doesn't run at all. The problem is intermittent so it is difficult to check for spark at the exact time it happens. As far as the fuel pump - it's always cyl # 2 and the fuel pump was rebuilt a few months ago.

FYI - replacing the ing coil for number 2 cylinder corrected the problem.
