Hey all. Might be kind of a obvious answer here, but Would something like this be caused by a CDI unit running hot? Anyone ever seen one melt this bad before? I can’t imagine it’s anything from the intake causing this right?

Do you think excessive engine temp or excessive CDI temp?Originally posted by boscoe99 View PostCertainly the damage is due to an excessive temperature. IMO.
Can't say that I have seen one that bad.
The air cooled rectifier/regulator below the CDI is known to ignite and damage the CDI but from what I can see the R/R is not damaged.

Just guessing really. Power feed is into the CDI at the bottom of same. Seems to be more damage at the bottom of the CDI.Originally posted by 99yam40 View Postso you are thinking electrical arcing or wire getting hot enough to set the plastic of fire.
interesting
R/R looks pristine. Usually it is the R/R that lights up and damages the CDI. Or ECU. Depending upon the model.
