I use V for a V configuration, O for an Opposed configuration and I for an Inline configuration. V4/V6/V8 and I4/I6 for instance.

I see that some use the letter L instead of the letter I. An L6 for instance.

Do those that use the L refer to the motor as a Line 6 or do they say Inline 6?

      The capital I looks like a lower case L ( l )
maybe that is where some confusion happens

Mercury Marine refers to the Verado as an L6. Not an I6.

But as said on the internet time and time again "words don't matter".

My brothers old 64 ford truck had a "straight six" in it my dad would say. First engine I helped my father and brother do a complete overhaul on...i mostly washed all the parts with gas in a bucket with bare hands..lol I think I was about 12.

Let's not forget the Dodge Slant 6.

                Which was an I6.

                Or an L6.

                  that would be 1/2 of a V
                  /6 or maybe a \6

did you ever drop one of the screws when changing the points and condencer and have it disappear inside the distributor?
                  I did.
had to pull the distributor to get it back out.
I did not trust it staying where it would not cause problems
