I need to monitor my RPM's to adjust my air adjustment screws on my 4 cylinder Yamaha. I have an old two wire tach/dwell meter, with one red and one black wire. It it's day, the black wire was connected to the coil and the red wire was connected to positive. I have 2 dual file, double coils. I suppose I could try and connect to those or is there a better way? The wires going to tach at the console are Grn/Red and Grn. I figure I had better check the forum before attempting it to avoid damaging something. I realize that the reading on my old tach might not be accurate, I just want to detect RPM change while turning the screws.

Thanks. You're probably right. Maybe I will find a regular digital tach that I can plug into the connector on the engine.Originally posted by 99yam40 View PostI would think those old units will not work.
the Yamahas I have dealt with count the number of pulses from the lighting coil on the battery charging system

Exactly what I was looking for, the LCD gauge with the wrap around wire. I didn't know they made those. The only ones I can find are cheapy 12.00 ones, but they appear to sell well and serve the purpose.Originally posted by 99yam40 View Postthey make tachs to read off of plug wire impulses, you just rap a wire around the pug wire.
even some inductive timing lights will give RPM

It's too far forward to monitor while I am tweaking the carbs, plus its analog markings are very coarse. I like the Idea of a digital gauge.Originally posted by 99yam40 View Postthey may have a problem running along close to other plug wires, (pick up the other impulses also)
what is wrong with the tach you have?
Yes, I was thinking the same thing about interference from the other plug wires.
